Henry Foundation for Botanical Research

Nonprofit, Faith & Community
About

Mary G. Henry’s lifelong love of the wilderness – and the plants of wild, natural places – inspired the garden she conceived. The local geology of her garden, on property purchased in the 1920’s, creates a diversity of habitats for growing plants from all parts of North America, and natural vistas of the garden’s scientific collections.

The Henry Foundation maintains Mary Henry’s living plant collections in informal gardens, with plants sited according to their growth requirements creating assemblages that reflect natural plant communities. Careful management of the Foundation’s Gladwyne hillside property encourages the experience of its unique beauty – the product of Mary Henry’s passion for botany and horticulture. Expect to find interest and education in blooms, birds, terrain, and more at any time throughout the year.

Given the rugged nature of the garden’s landscape, all visitors should wear sturdy outdoor footwear. Long pants are also recommended and walking sticks are encouraged for the steeper, more uneven terrain.
