Rio Grand Steakhouse

Robert Kowalewski and Howard Schelde, brother-in-laws, started their partnership in the restaurant business with a Mr. Steak franchise in 1968. Through hard work and long hours, they quickly grew their number of Mr. Steak’s from one to seven. In 1986, they changed the name to Schelde’s Grille and Spirits.

In addition to Schelde restaurants, we had many other concepts;

Jose Babushka’s, Grand Rapids Brewing Company, Freshwater Lodge, TraVino Traverse Wine & Grille, Bowers Harbor Inn & The Bowery, The Wanigan, Auntie Pasta’s, The Cove, Bonfire Bistro & Brewery, and Rio Grand Steakhouses.

More than 45 years later, the Kowalewski family’s second generation continues the tradition. We strive to consistently exceed your expectations by delivering the highest quality food, beverages and service in a warm and inviting atmosphere.
