The Rabbit Sanctuary

Since 1995 Great Lakes Rabbit Sanctuary (GLRS) has provided a safe haven for abandoned, abused, and neglected animals. We were formerly known as “PigHoppers,” rescuing various breeds of pigs, rabbits, and other animal. In 2003, finding that there was an overwhelming need in our area to provide for domestic rabbits in particular, we changed our name and focus to domestic rabbits.

We rescue rabbits from all across Michigan, and when able, from other areas of the United States as well. Upon their arrival at GLRS the rabbits are given medical care if needed and are spayed or neutered, after which they are ready to meet their potential adoptors! GLRS is a no-kill facility. Those rabbits who are not eligible for adoption, either due to health or temperament, live out their lives peacefully at the sanctuary.

In addition to providing a safe and loving environment, GLRS also strives to educate the public about domestic rabbits, including rabbit care and behavior. Just as with cats and dogs, a rabbit may not be the best furry companion for a family. Our hope is that our educational efforts will mean fewer rabbits needing our help in the future.

Visiting the Sanctuary: We welcome visitors and are very excited to share the wonders of the sanctuary, however, we are not open to the public on a daily basis. Tours are available by appointment during the spring, summer, and early fall. Please email us at least 48 hours in advance to schedule a visit. To help us continue providing a safe haven for the animals, we request a donation of $5.00 per person for tours of the sanctuary.
