Why is Boise so Haunted?

Take A Little Off The Top

The Belmont Barbershop is known for harboring secrets, a building ripe with history and hauntings. Take a Boise ghost tour to learn the bone-chilling story of Raymond Snowden, “Idaho’s Jack Ripper,” and the bloodied bathroom that led to his capture. After a date that didn’t go his way, Snowden killed his victim in a flurry of knife stabs.

The sanctuary of Hannifan’s Cigar Shop bathroom, which once operated out of the Barbershop, temporarily hid the murderer until dawn. His killing streak ended that day, but the grim details of his crimes are still remembered when the lights go off.

Phantom footsteps irk the employees and guests at Belmont Barbershop. Many believe it’s the spirit of Snowden, who later died in prison, reliving his last moments of freedom. Discover the unflinching truth behind Boise’s most gory tales and ghost stories with Boise Ghosts.

Boise’s Most Haunted

While many associate the City of Trees with natural purity and brightness, its history reveals a more sinister side. The Old Idaho Penitentiary is one place where the past takes on new life after dark. Here, over 13,000 inmates were held across 101 years, and the jail itself was built by the prisoners who lived and died inside. Ten executions took place here, some of them very famous, and whatever stayed behind in that building isn’t subtle about it.

Up in the foothills, the Fort Boise Military Cemetery holds soldiers buried without records. Three bodies turned up unannounced during the late ‘90s, an event that forever changed public opinion of the site and may have even increased ghostly activity. At the Basque Center downtown, the Lady in Black has been described as peaceful by everyone who’s seen her – but her presence remains, foreboding nonetheless.

Finally, at StrangeLove Nightclub, a woman died in the elevator shaft sometime in the Roaring ‘20s. Then, in 2017, a murder on the premises put the spotlight back on this old club and the ghosts that haunt it when the last patron leaves – and sometimes before.
