Monticello III Canal Boat Restoration Project
Launched in 1989, the Monticello III Horse-Drawn Canal Boat was built to replace the Monticello II, an all-wood vessel crafted by Marshall Jacobs in 1968. The Monticello III features a stainless steel hull complemented by hand-crafted wooden flooring, railings, seats, planks, and trim. After 36 years of service, she’s now ready for restoration. While the hull remains in excellent condition, all wooden elements require replacement and repainting to restore the boat to its former glory. Spanning 75 feet in length and weighing 25 tons, the Monticello III has carried over 300,000 passengers along the one-mile restored section of the Ohio and Erie Canal. This restoration effort will ensure that visitors to Coshocton County can continue to enjoy the cherished tradition of canal boat rides—a legacy more than 50 years strong.
