Built in 1853, the Bennett-Kempf House is a classic example of the then-popular Greek Revival architectural style. The lot was purchased by Mary Bennett, wife of the Postmaster Henry Bennett, for $175; the Kempfs moved in as boarders in 1888 and later purchased the house in 1894. Due to the great interest in historic preservation in the 1960s, the city of Ann Arbor decided to establish the Kempf House Museum with a volunteer board.
